Past Events

On “date,” the BASTA team headed out into the nighttime streets of Delhi. Up until approximately 5 in the morning, we went to check on those who were sleeping on the streets and in temporary shelters. Our efforts appeared to be quite modest given that we had 2,350 blankets to distribute. We had already located groups of homeless people huddled together in the chilly air of December, waiting for the following morning to arrive. A significant number of them are squatting in unhygienic locations, such as sewage ditches and under bridges, among other places. During this present cold weather, BASTA is worried about the health of families, and especially children, who are at a greater risk of being ill as a result of the cold. They were a striking illustration of how the government of the day was unable to provide even the most fundamental living facilities to them, and a good many of them were drug users. In addition, we had conversations with the family members of outstation patients who were compelled to stay in the hospital without a roof while their loved one was receiving treatment at AIIMS. They cannot afford to stay in hotels, as the financial strain caused by their extensive medical bills was already too much for them to bear. We hope that others will be motivated to take action beyond what we’ve already done.
